Yamas! Toronto has an abundance of restaurants, but it's the Greek food that I love best. Chicago, Detroit and New York have a lot of Greeks and some amazing food. However, those stubborn Greeks do it real good in Toronto. Mezes is situated in the heart of Greek Town on Danforth and is a sensational eatery.

Mezes means "little plates" and serves authentic Greek cuisine in an atmosphere of elegance and warmth. The food is fantastic and the atmosphere is certainly very inviting.

You know this is a great Greek grub because the foodies I went with are, well, Greek. Their food is delightful, from the grilled octopus with lemon and olive oil, to the sexy, flaky spanakopita. I am a huge fan of Taramosalta, which is a red caviar dip with pureed potatoes, extra virgin olive oil and lemon. The Saganaki is a flavorful Kefalograviera cheese, pan-browned then flambéed with brandy. It's warm and wet, just the way I like it. I am also a fan of their version of lasagna; it's called Mousaka and alternates layers of eggplant, potatoes, zucchini and spiced ground beef, topped with béchamel sauce.

Mezes' décor is simple and doesn't detract from the main event which is the food. It's a sexy date restaurant because of the friendly staff and fantastic food. It's not going to break the bank either. Make reservations on the weekend.
