Abbot on the Hill on Yonge Street, around the corner from the Summer Hill subway station in the Rosedale/Summer Hill area, is a consistent little gem. It’s a "gastro pub" which is a British term that usually implies great gourmet pub food. Abbot on the Hill delivers just that and more. This pub is a must visit anytime during the courtship of your gal.
The atmosphere is relaxed and welcoming while the décor is charming and regal which is appropriate for the neighborhood it’s in. Their pints of nourishment from around the world (we're talking draught) include 6 beers from England (including the hard to find Fullers London Porter), 5 beers from Germany, 2 from Belgium, 2 from The Netherlands, 1 Danish, 1 Scottish and 1 Irish. Of course there are many beers in bottles, a variety of wines by the glass and amazing drams of Scotch. They have 17 kinds of Scotch, but unfortunately the oldest is only 16 years.
In addition to the fantastic beer and other liquid libations that they serve, Abbot on the Hill also creates delicious dishes. The food is absolutely fantastic. I have sampled their burgers, the artichoke and spinach dip, the house pate, artisan cheese plate, and the fish and chips without complaint. In addition, several times a month, Abbot on the Hill creates special menus/beer pairings which cost anywhere from $50-$60 per person. For that price you get a pre-fixed meal with complementing pints of lovely beer.
The owners and wait staff are all very cool. One lovely pint puller remembered me and my gal months after our previous visit. No matter what time of day you come to Abbot on the Hill, you and your date will have a pleasant time drinking and eating. It’s a great first date place!
