Mexican food is one of my favorite cuisines, so it shouldn't surprise you that I think Don Cuco's in Toluca Lake, Los Angeles is funtastic. The food isn't the most amazing Mexican food I have ever had, but it's tasty and the margaritas are strong. If you're looking for a little lubrication, suck down a few of these flavorful concoctions.
I have been to Don Cuco's numerous times on dates, for my birthday, or just to eat food and get happy with friends. No matter what day of week it is, the place is always packed. The seating is dominated by big booths where lovers can slide in next to each other. It's a great date place.
There is no need to order appetizers, as baskets of warm house-made tortilla chips served with mild and spicy salsa and sour cream arrive at your table promptly. Most entrees include either a salad or soup to start. Get the meatball. It's nothing special, but it's got meat in it.
I love the fajitas at Don Cuco's. This is a great item to share with your date. My other favorite dishes are the Camarones Cuco and the Enchilada Suiza. The camarones are jumbo shrimp marinated in garlic, wrapped in bacon and served on a bed of rice. Enchiladas suizas are rolled tortillas dipped in green tomatillo sauce, stuffed with chunks of chicken and served with sliced avocado and sour cream.
The menu is large and the atmosphere is festive. If you go on the weekend or during happy hour, expect the joint to be packed. Try making a reservation or just squeeze in at the bar until your table is ready. You will be sure to have a great date at Don Cuco's in Toluca Lake, or at one of their other three locations in southern California.
